Exodus 34:6

The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth.

This verse reveals the beautiful picture of our God’s characteristics. In this current world, where there’s no place for truth, God reveals His faithfulness and redirects us to rely on Him. This verse reminds us that the God we serve is not defined by anger or distance, but by steadfast love and faithfulness that never run out.

In today’s verse, ‘the Lord’ (Yahweh) is repeated twice to emphasize God’s unchanging and covenant-keeping nature. God remains personal and faithful, and He actively involves Himself in our lives.

Merciful and gracious: God demonstrates compassion for our weaknesses and failures. Grace is His unearned favor. God responds to sin and brokenness, not first with punishment but with compassion, and desires to restore us.

Long-suffering: God is slow to anger. Unlike humanity, He is not quick to judge but gives us time to repent, reflect, grow, and return to Him. His patience reflects love and a willingness to endure our shortcomings.

Abounding in goodness and truth: His goodness shows His kindness, His generosity, and His love. In conclusion, He is compassionate yet truthful, patient yet holy, gracious yet faithful.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for revealing Your character to us—merciful, gracious, patient, and abounding in goodness and truth. In a world where truth is scarce and hearts are restless, help us trust in Your steadfast love and faithfulness that never run out. Teach us to reflect Your nature in our lives: to show mercy to others, to practice patience, and to walk in truth. May Your goodness overflow in us so that we become instruments of Your grace and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
