Stillness That Strengthens

Psalm 62:1-2

“Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.”

Faced with intense opposition, David claims that God is his rock, salvation, and defense. He instructs his soul to wait for God. Psalm 62:1 proclaims that David is sure to wait on the Lord through whatever difficulties or dangers he may face. Psalm 62:2 gives us the reason for this dependence. David has always seen God as his salvation, rock, and defense. He’s confident that he will not be moved.

David was a humble shepherd boy, faithfully tending his father’s sheep. Yet God saw in him a heart that trusted, obeyed, and worshiped Him. Anointed by Samuel, David rose from the pasture to the palace, defeating Goliath through faith, not strength. Before David ever wore a crown, he walked through years of hardship. He faced jealousy, hatred, and rejection sometimes from his own people. David stumbled, repented, and reconciled, yet never strayed from God. He had learnt to depend, rest, and wait on God.

In a world that glorifies busyness, God invites us to something sacred: resting in Him. Not the kind of rest that comes from a nap or vacation, but the deep rest of a soul anchored in God’s unshakable strength.

When we base our worth on achievements or people’s approval, we’ll always feel unstable. But when we stand on the Rock — Christ — our peace doesn’t depend on circumstances. To rest in God is to trust that He holds our life together even when we can’t. Like David, we can place our confidence in God, finding unshakable peace and rest that no storm or challenge can take away.
