Sheltered in His Wings

Psalm 57:1

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in You; and in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, until these calamities have passed by.

David penned these words while hiding in a cave, pursued by King Saul who sought his life. Yet, even in the darkness of uncertainty and fear, David’s heart was anchored in faith. He didn’t cry out in despair but in dependence: “Have mercy on me, my God.” His refuge wasn’t in the cave’s walls or in his own strength, but in the presence of God — the One who shelters, protects, and delivers.

There are moments in our lives when fear surrounds us — when problems loom like Saul’s soldiers at the cave’s mouth. In such times, our natural instinct may be to run, hide, or fight back. But Psalm 57:1 invites us to rest instead — under the shadow of God’s wings. This is not a place of passivity, but of trust. It’s a posture that says, “God, I know You’re in control, even when I am not.”

The “shadow of His wings” paints a tender image of divine protection — like a mother bird covering her young. It reminds us that no storm lasts forever; the disaster will pass. But until it does, God’s presence is enough.

Today, whatever you face, whisper David’s prayer: “Have mercy on me, O God.” Then rest — safely, securely, and confidently — in His refuge.
