Isaiah 49:16
See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me.
A quick way to remember something is to write it on our palms. Studies show that this method aids memory. Because the note is literally on our hands, it becomes an impossible-to-ignore reminder. It is a powerful, low-tech way to ensure we don’t forget what’s important.
Isaiah 49:16 reveals that God has inscribed us on the palms of His hands. The word “inscribed” or “engraved” signifies permanence – not a temporary handwritten note, but an enduring mark. God reassures His people in exile that they are permanently engraved on His palms and never forgotten. He is saying, “I won’t forget you. I am committed to you. Everything I do, I do with you in mind. I care for you deeply.” God reassures Israel of His unchanging compassion and steadfast love.
Walls represent security and protection. God assures His people that their security and protection are always before Him. He is aware of every detail of their lives, even while they are in enemy territory. The walls may also symbolize the broken walls of Jerusalem, pointing to God’s plan to restore what was destroyed. Therefore, He promises His people safety in exile, and restoration of their city and their lives.
Today, God’s assurance remains with all who believe in Him. We, as children of God, are engraved on His palms, and our walls are continually before Him. No matter our current situation, God reminds us of His unfailing compassion, His protection, safety, and restoration.
During this season of Lent, let’s remember that we are not forgotten but always watched over. May our thoughts and words reflect our confidence in God’s presence, knowing that He is faithful to keep all His promises.
