Delight in True Treasure

Psalm 37:4—”Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

In the world today, people delight themselves with ‘material possessions’: the latest phone, flashiest car, biggest property with lavish facilities; or status, and other temporary things of this world. What about you? Where do you spend the most part of your time in any day? If we keep count, we will discover the interest that we have, the thing we delight in. It could be a thing, a sport, a food item, an event, a hobby, or even a person. If we delight in things, we are never satisfied. We never truly get what we want, we always want more. The lesson King Solomon learned when he pursued earthly treasure is: “Everything is meaningless!” On the other hand, when we wait on the Lord, it is true treasure indeed!

When we delight ourselves and celebrate in the Presence of the God as our chief delight, we find an ‘exquisite delicacy’, one that we want to linger with. This means that we ache to be in the presence of God every time we spend some time with Him. Our time with God becomes precious with the peace that we get after our commune. We look forward to our next time with Him. His joys become our joys, and we try to change to become like Him. Our relationship is deeper with God.  It is at this time that God; who knows our deepest longing, or desire in our heart, will make it come to pass, if it aligns with His will for our lives. God wants what is best for us. If something is not good for us in our timeline, He will not allow it to happen. Also, if He finds us not mature enough to handle what He has in store for us, Christ will not allow it to come to pass till we are ready. In the meanwhile, we will delight in praise to God for who He is and for what He does in our life, while staying in His will. God does not give us all our heart’s desires all the time, but most often we get in abundance than we can even think. This is our God. The deepest needs, desires, and questions of our hearts are all bound up in the life and love of God. God knows what we truly need is His love and delight in us. When our love is centered on God and we delight in Him, the deepest yearnings of our heart will be fulfilled by His personal love and grace for us. We shall be completely satisfied in Him.

When we truly delight in the eternal things of God, our desires will begin to parallel His and we will never go unfulfilled. (Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things [the necessities of life] will be given to you as well.” God’s promise was repeated five times in this Psalm – the righteous who meekly wait for the Lord will be blessed by God with the gift of the Land (i.e., Land of Heaven for eternity).
